The Chillicothe Rotary Club has awarded $15,000 to another Chillicothe non-profit organization, Homes of Hope, to help cover the cost of rehabbing a house that will be used to help temporarily homeless families transition into more permanent residences.
A service club with a motto of “Service Above Self”, Rotary members recently gave their time to help with the demolition work on the project also. “ We want to serve our fellowman and women both here and abroad” stated Linda Brown, President of the group that numbers 66 motivated and dedicated members. “Homes of Hope is a worthwhile endeavor to help those in need move beyond dire circumstances in a practical way”.
Homes of Hope is a program of Love, INC that offers individuals and families in need a 3 to 6 months in transitional housing until they can get back on their feet again. The program provides mentoring and hands on assistance before and after they find stable living arrangements. “ This program is more than a hand out,” said Director, Eva Gerber, “it’s a hand up to those that need it most.”

Rotary Club of Chillicothe & Local Companies raise $5,000 to help eradicate polio worldwide.
As part of Rotary International’s pledge to $200 million toward a $355 million challenge grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation over three years, the noon Rotary club of Chillicothe recently raised $5,000 to help end polio worldwide.
Club members placed their loose change at the clubs weekly meetings in small piggy banks over a six-month period in an effort to reach the challenge goal of $1,000. Dubbed “Pigs for Polio,” the challenge amount was matched by four local companies; Accurate Heating and Cooling, Classic Brands, Horizon/Telcom and Petron Oil.

Chillicothe Rotary Members Dave Brownfield, Jim Doersam, Bryce Leachman and
Club President Linda Brown lead the effort toward the $5,000 goal to help eradicate polio.
Rotary, a humanitarian service organization with nearly 33,000 clubs in more than 200 countries, made polio eradication its top priority in 1985. As the volunteer arm and lead private sector contributor in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), Rotary has since contributed more than $900 million to help immunize more than two billion children in 122 countries.
Local Club President, Linda Brown views Rotary’s fundraising efforts as a way to fulfill the organizations promise of a polio-free world. “Twenty years ago, we made a pledge to end this crippling and potentially fatal disease- once and for all. As we stand at the brink of victory, we are doing everything within our power to fulfill this promise to the children of the world.”
Remarkable progress has been achieved in the fight against polio. Since 1988, the number of polio cases has been reduced from 350,000 a year to less than 1,700 in 2009. Today 70 percent of the world’s population lives in polio free counties. The Americas were declared free from polio in 1994, the Western Pacific region in 2000 and Europe in 2002.
A highly infectious disease, polio still strikes children mainly under the age of five in countries in Africa and South Asia. Polio can cause paralysis and sometimes death. As there is no cure for polio, the best protection is prevention. For as little as 60 cents of oral vaccine, a child can be protected against polio for life.
